Syed Shah Mohammed
Hussian's Mausoleum, popularly known as Chandphira Gumbadh, is situated
in the centre of the town. This square building, with a large dome in
the centre, is surrounded by tall walls. The parapets of the building
are faced with arabesque panels in plater.
This
beautiful mosque is located near the fort. a Persain insription in it
indicates that it was built in 1691 AD, during the reign of Aurangazeb.
Gandikota,
also known as the 'gorge fort', contains debris of ancient structures
in varying stages of decay. Within the fort there are many important
buildings, like the Jama Masjid, a large granary and temples. A striking
'Pigeon Tower' and a place with plastered decorations are also to be
seen. The Picturesque woods nearby Guriginjakona and Agastyasram, are
worth visiting.
The
temple of Jotisvara or Jotinatha, built on the left bank of Pennaru,
is a historically important shrine.
Pushpagiri
is famous for its temple that are on a hill devoid of vegetation. The
largest and best known of them is the Chennakesava Temple, which has
a lofty gopuram, sculptured depicting scenes from the epics, floral motifs
and elaborately engraved pillars. The annual temple festival is for ten
days in March - April.
The
famous Kodandaramaswami Temple here is of splendid architecture. The
lofy gateway, the large and beautifully sculptured mandapam with 32 pillars,
hthe inner chamber and the sanctum make it a most impressive temple.
