Uttar kannad, located on the western coast, is a place if varied historical,
culture and religious importance. It is one of the major tourist districts
in the state. An added attraction is its proximity to goa on the north.
Karwar, the district
headquarters, surrounded by beaches, is an excellent beach resort.
The town has been chosen as the site for a mojor naval
base. The drive from Hubli (Dharwad district) to karwar, a distance of
160 km, takes one through hills and valleys covered dense tropical jungles
and plenty of wildlife.
