Trichy - Tamilnadu

Tiruchirapalli (also spelt Tiruchirappalli, commonly known as Tiruchi or Trichy, formerly known as Trichinopoly under British rule) is a city situated on the banks of the Cauvery River, centrally located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is the administrative headquarters of Tiruchirappalli District.

Tiruchirappalli District has an area of 11,075 km². It is bounded on the north by Salem District, on the northeast by Perambalur District, on the east by Thanjavur District, on the southeast by Pudukkottai District, on the south by Sivaganga and Madurai districts, on the southwest by Dindigul District, on the west by Karur District, and on the northwest by Namakkal District.

The temple towns of Srirangam, Uttamar Kovil, and Thiruvanaikavil are near Tiruchirapalli. Other towns include Kumaravayalur, Manapparai, Samayapuram, and Kumaravayalur. The Cauvery River runs through the district, and the Grand Anicut, a dam built across the Cauvery in the 2nd century is still in use as part of the district's irrigation system.

Bus services
Trichy is well connected to various parts of Tamilnadu, by private, and government run bus services. The Theppakulam bus stand, near RockFort temple, runs local, and mofussil bus serivces, that connect people to nearby towns and villages. Bus services are frequent, once every 5/10 minutes, and this public transport moves the whole of Trichy, and its heavily subsidised by the government.

The 'central' bus stand runs long distance, services to major cities from Trichy. Here again, the same serivce pattern holds.

Trichy is the hub of [Southern Railway]'s operations to connect central Tamilnadu, and various parts of India; notably regions in [Kerala] , [Andhra Pradesh], [Bengal], [Bihar], [Maharstra], [Karnataka], [Delhi] and [Madhya Pradesh].

Trichy has an airport about 7-8Km from the city, that runs flights to Indian cities, territories and neighbouring countries SriLanka and Singapore. Its a small airport though, but with decent facilities.
